🎵 First: Lollapalooza Is HUGE

Don't underestimate Grant Park.

Lollapalooza features 170+ artists across eight stages, and those stages can be spread across opposite ends of the festival grounds.

If one artist finishes and your next artist starts five minutes later on the other side of the park, you're probably not making it to the front.

Our tip: Pick your must-see artists before arriving.

Build your day around 2–4 performances you absolutely don't want to miss, then treat everything else as a bonus.

Some of the best moments at Lollapalooza happen when you walk past a stage and unexpectedly discover someone you've never listened to before.

🚇 Don't Drive to Lollapalooza Unless You Have To

One of the biggest advantages of Lolla being downtown is that you really don't need a car.

CTA, Metra and Pace all provide ways to reach the area around Grant Park. Lollapalooza itself recommends public transportation as one of the primary ways of getting to the festival.

For most visitors, the train is going to be our recommendation.

You'll also avoid sitting in downtown traffic while thousands of people are leaving Grant Park at the same time.

Chicago tip: Don't automatically request an Uber from directly outside the festival when the headliner ends.

Walk several blocks away from Grant Park first. You'll get away from the largest crowds and road closures before arranging your ride.

👟 Wear Shoes You Actually Want to Walk In

This isn't the weekend to break in new shoes.

You're going to walk.

A lot.

The festival grounds include grass, gravel and paved surfaces, and Lollapalooza itself recommends choosing footwear accordingly.

Comfort wins.

Your outfit can still look great — just remember that you're potentially spending 10+ hours standing, dancing and walking around Grant Park.

And if it rains?

Expect the grass to become part of the experience.

🎒 Know the Lollapalooza Bag Policy BEFORE You Arrive

This can save you a massive headache at the entrance.

Under the current policy, small clutch purses and fanny packs 6" × 9" or smaller don't need to be clear, provided they meet the pocket restriction.

Larger bags must be clear and smaller than 12" × 6" × 12".

Hydration packs are an exception to the clear-bag requirement, although they must enter empty and comply with compartment restrictions.

Don't show up with a normal backpack assuming security will let it slide.

They might not.

And every bag gets searched.

💧 Bring an Empty Water Bottle

This is one of the easiest Lollapalooza hacks.

Bring an empty reusable water bottle or hydration pack.

They're currently permitted, and the festival provides complimentary water refill stations.

Chicago in late July and early August can get hot, and you're going to be outside for hours.

Hydrate before you're thirsty.

Seriously.

🔋 Bring a Portable Charger

Between recording performances, taking pictures, texting your group, checking set times and navigating Chicago afterward, your phone can get destroyed by the end of the day.

Portable battery packs are currently allowed inside Lollapalooza.

We'd consider one almost essential.

Especially because your phone becomes much more important when you're trying to find your friends in a crowd of thousands.

📱 Screenshot Your Schedule

Don't depend entirely on having perfect cell service.

Before entering, screenshot:

Your artist schedule + festival map + hotel address + anything else you absolutely need.

Even better, set your phone's lock screen to your schedule for the day.

Now you don't have to constantly unlock your phone and search for it.

👥 Choose a Meeting Spot With Your Friends

This sounds unnecessary.

Until you lose somebody.

Pick one very specific landmark inside the festival and establish it as your meeting point.

Not:

"Meet near the stage."

Instead:

"If we lose each other, meet at this exact location at 7:30."

Thousands of people simultaneously texting "where are you?" isn't a particularly effective strategy.

☀️ Sunscreen — But Check What You're Bringing

Sunscreen is important, but pay attention to the rules.

Current Lollapalooza policy permits non-aerosol sunscreen containers of 3.4 ounces or less. Aerosol containers are prohibited.

A hat and sunglasses are also worth bringing.

🌧️ Check Chicago Weather the Morning Of

Chicago weather can change your entire Lollapalooza experience.

Check it every morning, not just at the beginning of the weekend.

And there's one slightly counterintuitive rule worth knowing:

Umbrellas are prohibited.

So don't see rain in the forecast and automatically throw an umbrella in your bag.

🍔 Don't Forget About the Food

You don't need to leave Lollapalooza to experience some Chicago food.

Part of the festival is its food program, with participating Chicago restaurants and vendors operating inside Grant Park.

Instead of eating the first thing you see, walk around and see what's available.

We'd actually make trying something from a Chicago restaurant part of the experience.

🎤 You Don't Need to Stand at the Front for Every Artist

This is one of the biggest mistakes first-timers make.

Getting close for your favorite artist?

Absolutely.

Trying to get close for every performance?

You're going to spend your entire day fighting crowds.

Sometimes sitting farther back with some food and watching a set with the Chicago skyline behind the stage is a better experience.

Save your energy for the performers you actually care about.

🏙️ Lollapalooza Doesn't End When You Leave Grant Park

This is something visitors don't always realize.

During Lolla weekend, Chicago itself becomes part of the festival.

There are aftershows, parties, club events, restaurant activations, brand events and unofficial Lolla-related events happening throughout the city.

So don't necessarily plan to go straight back to your hotel every night.

Some of our favorite Lollapalooza-weekend experiences have happened outside the festival itself.

If nightlife matters to you, research what's happening before arriving in Chicago. The most desirable events can fill up.

🏨 Where Should You Stay for Lollapalooza?

If your budget allows it, staying around the Loop, South Loop, River North or another CTA-accessible neighborhood can make the weekend much easier.

Don't focus exclusively on which hotel is geographically closest to Grant Park.

Ask:

Can I easily get from this hotel to the festival using CTA or by walking?

That's often more important.

🚪 Don't Immediately Leave After Every Headliner

Here's a little strategy.

When the biggest performance ends, an enormous portion of Grant Park starts moving toward the exits simultaneously.

If you're not in a rush, sometimes it's worth giving the crowd a little time to move.

If you are leaving with everyone else, expect congestion and be patient.

🎟️ Be Careful Buying Lollapalooza Wristbands

This is an important one.

Lollapalooza says wristbands purchased through Front Gate Tickets or the Ticketmaster Verified Exchange are the valid authorized options; counterfeit wristbands can result in being denied entry.

Your wristband also isn't something to casually take on and off.

Once it's on, leave it alone.

For multi-day attendees, don't remove or tamper with it between festival days.

📸 Can You Bring a Camera Into Lollapalooza?

For normal festivalgoers, basic consumer point-and-shoot cameras are currently permitted.

Professional cameras, large detachable lenses, professional video equipment, tripods, monopods, selfie sticks and similar equipment are prohibited without appropriate authorization.

For most people, your phone is the easiest option.

And here's another tip from people who make content:

Don't record the entire concert.

Get your 10–20 second clip.

Take your picture.

Then put the phone down and actually watch the performance.

Is Lollapalooza Chicago Worth It?

We think there's something particularly special about experiencing a festival of this size in the middle of Chicago.

You're watching some of the world's biggest artists perform while the skyline towers behind Grant Park.

Then you walk outside the gates and you're immediately back in downtown Chicago.

Restaurants.

Hotels.

Rooftops.

Nightlife.

Aftershows.

Lake Michigan.

The festival is obviously the centerpiece, but Lollapalooza weekend is really an entire Chicago experience.

Come prepared, don't overschedule yourself, drink water, wear comfortable shoes and leave enough room in your plans for something unexpected.

Because those unexpected moments tend to become the stories you remember.
